Native perennial named for its profusion of rich orange flowers that attract many different kinds of butterflies, including the Monarch. Wonderful choice for the hot summer border.

  • Appearance: It has bright orange to yellow flowers that bloom in clusters atop upright stems.
  • Height: Typically grows 1-3 feet tall.
  • Leaves: Narrow, lance-shaped leaves.
  • Flowers: Bloom from early summer to early fall, providing a long season of color.

Benefits:

  • Attracts Pollinators: As the name suggests, it is particularly attractive to butterflies, including the Monarch butterfly. It also attracts bees and other pollinators.
  • Drought-Tolerant: Once established, it is very drought-resistant, making it a low-maintenance plant.
  • Native Plant: Being native to North America, it is well-suited to local climates and ecosystems.

Growing Conditions:

  • Soil: Prefers well-drained sandy or gravelly soils but is adaptable to a range of soil types.
  • Sunlight: Thrives in full sun but can tolerate light shade.
  • Watering: Requires minimal watering once established. Over-watering can lead to root rot.

Uses:

  • Gardens: Ideal for butterfly gardens, wildflower meadows, and naturalized areas.
  • Medicinal: Historically, Native Americans used parts of the plant for medicinal purposes, such as treating respiratory issues.

Care Tips:

  • Planting: Best planted in the spring or fall.
  • Propagation: Can be propagated by seed or root cuttings. Seeds need a period of cold stratification to germinate.
  • Maintenance: Cut back stems in late fall to early winter. Deadheading can promote additional blooms but is not necessary for the plant's health.

Butterfly Weed is a fantastic addition to any garden, providing beauty, supporting pollinators, and requiring minimal care.
